Virtual Baby Programme 2012
Bacon's College are running another year of it's successful Virtual Baby Programme for our Year 10 students; this programme is designed to help our young people to explore the physical, emotional and social consequences of parenthood.
The programme starts on Tuesday 23rd February with four groups;
23rd - 27th February Group Leaders Emma Bartlett & Angie Little
08th - 12th March Group Leaders Chris Alliston & Shirley Brazil
15th - 19th March Group Leaders Jeanette Russell & Carol Wardle
22nd - 26th March Group Leaders Tina Beales & Juliette Marshall
The programme is designed to inform young people about the realities of parenting. An important element that affects the family is that much of the learning takes place in the home. This involves students caring for a RealCare baby (an infant simulator) over a weeked and aims to help young people understand facts about babies:
Babies' demands and needs are unpredicatable and must be met promptly.
Babies require a great deal of time and attention.
Babies change parents' lives profoundly.
RealCare baby will require care throughout the day and night. The Baby's demands are very realistic, being based on the diary of a real baby. When Baby cries, it will be the young person's responsibility to attend to baby's needs. The young person responds to the cry by waving their ID across the baby's tummy. The young person must then judge what kind of care baby needs - whether it's feeding, burping, rocking or nappy changing.
Baby will also cry if roughly handled, held in a position it does not like, or if the head is not properly supported. Although baby will disrupt the home for a few days, just as a new baby would. This is a valuable lesson that will far outweigh the possible inconvenience.
It will be the students responsibility to keep Baby safe and cared for.
