Merits and Rewards

Merits are at the heart of our reward system.

A Merit is a subject sticker placed in the Student's planner.

Staff can issue a merit to a student when they have exceeded their or College expectations .

Merits are not given for meeting the normal expectations of behaviour, work or effort.

Only one merit may be issued at a time to a student – if you get a merit you will know that your teacher is really pleased with your behaviour, work or effort.

Collection of merits will lead to rewards…

• 10 Merits = Bronze Award plus certificate.
• 20 Merits = Silver Award plus certificate, Plus £5 Voucher of choice.
• 30 Merits = Gold Award plus certificate and, Plus £10 Voucher of choice.
• 40 Merits = Diamond Award plus certificate, Plus a £15 Voucher of choice.

Forgiveness and Restorative Justice is built in to our sanctions and rewards system

Demerits may be issued by staff if students do not meet their, or the College's expectations. Demerits are indicated by a sticker appearing on the merit page in the student's planner.

All students have an opportunity to neutralise their Demerits by making amends with the member of staff who issued it. This could be by showing an understanding of the reason they received their Demerit and apologising. It could be by completing a punishment or sanction such as a detention. In all cases students must demonstrate their understanding of what they did wrong and make appropriate reparations. We believe that this encourages emotional intelligence and helps students to develop and maintain positive relationships with members of staff
