Bacon's College Makes a Difference: School Council's Litter Picking Initiative

In a commendable initiative by the Bacon's College School Council, students recently took to the local area for a litter-picking activity, focusing particularly on reducing pollution in canals and waterways. This effort not only aimed to beautify the surrounding community but also to instigate a significant environmental impact. The enthusiasm and dedication shown by the participants made the event a resounding success, setting a precedent for future environmental initiatives.

The litter-picking event is part of a broader commitment by the school to environmental sustainability and community engagement. Following the success of this activity, the Environment Committee is gearing up for an exciting opportunity. Members will be visiting Oxford University to present their project, showcasing the tangible steps taken by Bacon's College students towards environmental conservation and community improvement.

Further enriching the School Council's experience, a workshop was held with Gill Wildman of Plot. This unique session was in collaboration with British Land, focusing on deriving inspiration from local communities for naming new spaces and roads in the area. The workshop provided a platform for students to delve into the essence of their neighbourhood, exploring meaningful and inspirational aspects that should be commemorated in place names.

Students engaged in thoughtful discussions about the importance of remembering and celebrating local history and values in the names of places. They also brainstormed ways to continue engaging with and contributing to the local community, emphasising the role of youth in shaping a vibrant and cohesive future for the area.

This series of initiatives by the Bacon's College School Council highlights the school's proactive approach to environmental issues and community involvement. It's a testament to the students' willingness to take on responsibilities that extend beyond the classroom, making a positive impact on the world around them.

The Bacon's College community looks forward to seeing the ongoing positive effects of these initiatives and the future projects the School Council will undertake. As we continue to engage with and learn from our local community, we remain committed to fostering an environment of care, responsibility, and inspiration for all.
