Law @ Bacon's

2022 marked the second year of our Mock Trial and Advocacy Programme as part of our partnership with QEB Hollis Whiteman Chambers, widely recognised as one of the leading sets of barristers' chambers in the country.

Programme outline 2022

Initiated by a former student of Bacon's College, Law @ Bacon's has been created to entice and support more students to grasp the world of Law and the legal industry in England. Along with the opportunity to visit the Chambers and meet with Barristers to find out more about career pathways in the Law, students also develop their writing and critical thinking skills. The top 10 students then go on to take part in an exciting Mock Trial at Hollis Whiteman Chambers.

Outcome

Stage 1

Essay-writing competition.

This stage is open to all Year 10 and Year 12 students in each of the schools.

Participating students will write an essay of no more than 1,500 words on one of the following topics:

1.     The rising cost of living in the UK is harming its children. Discuss.

2.     The UK Government should make it compulsory for all key-workers to be vaccinated against Covid-19. Discuss.

3.     Should employers be able to compel their employees to work from the office?

4.     Should there be a salary cap for elite sports players?

Schools will advertise this event internally, with the option of QEB barristers either coming to the school or zoom-ing in to an Assembly to launch this.

The essays will be marked internally by teachers.

3 finalists from each year, from each school, will be selected by 27 May 2022. These 6 finalists will move to Stage 2.

Stage 2

Video advocacy.

The 6 finalists from Stage 1 in each school will re-prepare and deliver their essay by way of oral argument of no longer than 5 minutes.

Students can choose either to do the same topic as in Stage 1, or to pick another topic. Please note there will be no additional marks for choosing one of the other topics.

Students will film themselves delivering their argument. These videos will be sent to QEB Hollis Whiteman.

The marking criteria for the video advocacy will be sent to the schools/students in advance.

Schools will collect the videos by 24 June 2022 and send them to Kyan Pucks of QEB Hollis Whiteman.

QEB Hollis Whiteman will judge this stage (this will be done remotely), and select 1 finalist from each year from each school (i.e. 2 finalists from each school) to move to Stage 3. Decisions will be made and communicated by 15 July 2022.

Stage 3

Advocacy Session and Mock Trial.

Advocacy session: in the second week of September, all Stage 2 finalists will attend QEB Hollis Whiteman for an Advocacy Session to prepare the Mock Trial.

Mock Trial: in the third or final week of September, all Stage 2 finalists will return to QEB Hollis Whiteman for the Mock Trial competition.

The Advocacy Session and the Mock Trial competition will take place in Chambers.

Both will be prepared and delivered by QEB Hollis Whiteman barristers.

The Mock Trial will take place and be judged in Chambers. The Judge will select one winner and two runners-up.
